Asha Dahya, the host of the rePROFilm Periodical Podcast, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign in support of her short documentary “Someone You Should Know.” The film features the stories of three women who underwent later abortions with the goal of breaking down stigma and fostering empathy. 

“Someone You Know” is about the extraordinary burdens and stigma that later abortion patients face. As we become accustomed to a post-Roe reality here in the United States, films like this are timelier and more important than ever.  

There are no abortion services in at least 89% of U.S. counties. The number of facilities offering later abortions is even more limited: Only a handful of states allow abortion after the first trimester. Given that one in four people in America will have an abortion before the age of 45, there is a good chance that this issue impacts you or “someone you know.”

Storytelling films have a unique power to connect us as human beings, and potentially shift our perspective on a very big and complex topic like abortion. Asha is utilizing animation to help retell each of the women’s stories. The film also features We Testify founder Renee Bracey Sherman and Meera Shah, the chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. Asha aims to release the film on June 24, 2023, the one- year anniversary of Roe being overturned.
